After 2020: trends for the future

No matter how hard we work to achieve the objective of 100% open access by 2020, we will still need to work on the transition beyond 2020. For this reason, a number of scenarios are currently being devised for the open access situation in the future. These scenarios provide a basis for making policy choices in the coming period.

Even when it comes to the steps to be taken after 2020, it is currently all ‘work in progress’. The scenarios are not ready yet; they are being developed. A start has been made by revealing trends with input from various national and international stakeholders.

Eighteen dominant trends have been identified. These have been included and explained in this overview.
