Johan van de Worp
Johan van de Worp is secretary for the national Recognition & Rewards programme. ‘As programme secretary, I aim to be the link that connects the various parties involved. It's how I want to contribute to cultural change in the academic world.’
The purpose of the Recognition & Rewards programme is to effect a fundamental change in the appreciation and acknowledgement of research and researchers. Many academics feel there is a one-sided focus on research performance, measured using traditional, quantifiable output indicators. Our aspiration is to place a greater emphasis on quality, content and creativity in the assessment of academic achievements.
Johan studied history and political science at Leiden University. Before starting as programme secretary, he was a PhD candidate at Leiden University, and later worked as an academic researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Military History (NIMH). He completed his PhD in March 2022, with a dissertation titled Neither Red nor Orange: The Social Battle of the Dutch Naval Soldiers, 1870-1914.
