No further reopening of universities yet; new decision expected on 14 January

Today, the Dutch government decided that it is not yet safe for VET colleges, universities and universities of applied sciences to reopen. Following the decision to introduce a ‘hard’ lockdown in mid-December, there was hope that higher education might be able to reopen earlier than other sectors, on 10 January. UNL President Pieter Duisenberg: ‘Unfortunately, in light of the OMT's recommendations, the government has decided that reopening is not yet prudent. This naturally comes as a further setback for our staff and students. Luckily, examinations will be able to take place on location and the university libraries will remain open. In addition, we will once again try to organise online education as effectively as possible. We hope that in the coming weeks, there will quickly be more opportunities for teaching activities on campus. The situation will be re-evaluated on 14 January.’

The examinations for which students have been preparing can proceed as planned. Practical training and laboratory work will be able to continue and there will still be leeway to provide guidance for vulnerable students. For the time being, however, no other in-person teaching activities will be possible. The university libraries will remain open with the understanding that no more than 75 people may be present in a room and provided the usual hygiene measures are observed.
