The VSNU responds to the report 'Balance in the science system'

The VSNU is grateful to Minister Van Engelshoven and the Weckhuysen Committee for the report 'Balance in the science system' and the recommendations that they have made. It is a good report with the necessary attention for unrelated research. The VSNU agrees with the Commission that the balance between independent and strategic research must be restored. In order to do this, a substantial investment in untied research is needed. The rolling grant system proposed by the Commission is an excellent start to solve problems in work and application pressure. The Commission calculates that this will require an investment of €1 billion. We ask the government to make this investment in the first flow of funds. In addition to this rolling grant, the second flow of funds should also be balanced, as proposed in the report. This will require an investment for independent research at NWO.
